Newly-appointed chancellor, Rishi Sunak is set to deliver the financial statement revealing the government’s spending plans for 2020-2021.
While the Prime Minister has promised to ‘level up’ parts of the UK, much of his focus has so far been on northern towns and cities.
Yet a ‘systematic funding and policy bias’ is causing pockets of social deprivation in rural and coastal areas like Cornwall, says Cornwall Council leader Julian German.
He is calling for fair, long-term funding from Westminster to ensure that the council can continue to deliver vital services for its residents.
Councillor German said: ‘We want to ensure that Cornwall isn’t forgotten about.
‘Over the last 10 years, Cornwall Council has had to make over £380 million worth of savings.
‘Growing demand for services and reduced central government funding mean that we have had to fundamentally change the way we work in order to protect those services our residents value most
‘Now’s the time for the government to make good on its promise that no area will be worse off as a result of Brexit.’
