Pro-European campaigners will hold a candle-lit vigil this evening as Britain formally leaves the EU.

Members of Cornwall For Europe, which held hundreds of street stalls, meetings and marches in the county following the referendum of 2016, will gather in the centre of Truro.

The group says its members will ’still feel European’ and will continue to defend people’s rights and core values after Brexit Day.

Press officer for Cornwall for Europe Charles Boney, who lives near Liskeard, said that Britain ’had made a historic mistake’ in leaving the EU and that his group’s role now would be to help keep relationships with Europe as close as possible.

Similarly, the Lib Dem group on Cornwall Council has said that it will be working to ensure co-operation between Cornwall and Europe so that key industries such as agriculture, tourism and the creative sector can thrive.

The group has called upon the Prime Minister to keep his promise of continued funding for Cornwall after the funding stream from the EU dries up.

MP Sheryll Murray has said she may raise a glass this evening at 11pm while she attends a fundraising event in Saltash. She says she has confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson to deliver trade deals that will help the country prosper.
