Young people are interested in the EU Referendum: the problem is that they don’t find the politicians and businesspeople running the Remain or Leave campaigns inspiring or trustworthy.
These are the findings, released today, of a YouGov poll of 1,300 18- to 30-year-olds commissioned on the eve of a BBC youth debate about the Referendum, by anti-racism campaign HOPE not hate and youth empowerment movement Bite the Ballot, as the two organisations announce a mass voter registration campaign ahead of the Referendum vote.
Called#TurnUp, the campaign aims to register 500,000 people and engage and turn out many more on 23 June. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape this country’s future.
#Turnup will be a peer-to-peer campaign, allowing young voters to encourage their friends, colleagues and classmates to register.
Across a week of action between May 31 and June 7, the #TurnUp campaign will drive voter registration events at the workplace, among young workers and apprentices, in youth clubs, local communities, among families, students, and faith groups, and in "democracy cafés" (in partnership with Starbucks).
It will also partner with Twitter for coverage of a launch event in Manchester on 31 May and with Facebook for a Leaders Live stream event on 5 June, plus drive a Thunderclap campaign.
