POLICE officers had to be treated for smoke inhalation after pulling a man from a burning building.

The incident happened just before 2am on Sunday morning at Porthallow, between Looe and Polperro.

PC Wright, a Torpoint police officer, tweeted: ’I attended a report of a usual routine trespassing job, but it dynamically changed into my colleague and I pulling a person out of a sealed burning wooden gazebo where he tried taking his own life.

’We ripped back part of a transparent covering to deploy three fire extinguishers to little effect.

’We made the decision to enter, ripping material and dragging the male out.

’He was non-compliant after a struggle, but we managed to detain him under the Mental Health Act with smoke billowing out.

’Officers were treated for smoke inhalation.’

Police BCU Commander for Cornwall, T/Chief Supt Ian Drummond-Smith, tweeted: ’Amazing work by officers at Looe overnight, entering a burning wooden gazebo to rescue a male. Very brave.

’Male receiving treatment in hospital.

’Officers treated on scene by ambulance staff for smoke inhalation.’

Firefighters also attended the scene, and a spokesman for the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: ’A Critical Control unit was mobilised to a suspected persons-reported fire at a wooden structure in Porthallow at 1.56am. Crews from Looe, Polruan and Liskeard attended.

’On arrival, all persons were accounted for. Crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used a hose reel jet and C02 extinguisher to put the fire out. The fire was confirmed out at 2.26am.'
