THE owner of the Coryton Arms at St Mellion has been granted permission to make improvements and create a new two-storey extension.
The plans include the demolition of dilapidated 20th century extensions built onto the Grade II listed 17th century building, the repair and refurbishment of features including the chimney and windows, and the reclaiming of “lost” original features. The extension will be built to accommodate a new pub cellar and a micro brewery, and improvements will be made to the car park.
The plans were submitted by architects Scarratt and Martyn on behalf of David Stell.
The pub building is in a “very poor state of repair” states a report to Cornwall Council, and it has been closed to the public for over a year.
The refurbishment will see the layout of the building reordered with a restaurant upstairs to make the most of views across the Tamar Valley.
“The extension will provide enhanced accommodation that will revitalize the public house – an important resource for the community – that has been in decline for several years,” states the application.
“A thriving local pub will also bring visitors to the village.”
Strong concerns were expressed about the initial proposals from a heritage perspective by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the local authority’s Historic Environment Planning officer. The plans were subsequently amended by the applicant, and it was considered by the planning officer determining the case that the concerns had been suitably addressed.
