CAMPERS could soon be sleeping under the stars at one of Cornwall’s most famous hostelries.
Owner of the Jamaica Inn at Bolventor, Allen Jackson, has applied for planning permission to create a camping and caravanning site on fields to the south of the Inn.
The proposal for 20 touring pitches and a facilities building has been submitted by agent and landscape architects Andrew Davis Partnership.
The project put forward is for a low-density development, which would have as little visual impact as possible.
Pitches would be spaced out above the minimum standard required: the hard standing bases on one field would be spaced very generously, each being eight metres wide with a minimum of three metres between bases. This would significantly reduce the visual impact compared to a compact layout, says the agent, as well as providing privacy for the occupants.
The majority of the development is proposed to be located to the south of a tall native hedge which divides the site. This will mitigate views from the road into the site and provide a clear division between the existing listed building of the Jamaica Inn and the proposed touring bases
The southernmost of the two fields is currently used as an overflow car park for the Inn, and the existing access point to and from the car park would be used as access to the campsite.
The proposal would bring the equivalent of three new full-time jobs to the local area.
