JAMAICA Inn’s plans to create a campsite alongside the pub have been rejected by the local authority.

The proposal was for a high-quality touring caravan and camping field for 20 caravans and ten tents. The reason for refusal was that “the scale and introduction of colourful tents and white caravans, associated paraphernalia and increased human activity on to prominent sloping land visible from a number of public viewpoints, would fail to conserve and enhance the landscape character and natural beauty of the Bodmin Moor section of the Cornwall area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”.

Altarnun Parish Council had not supported the application: the local council felt that the scheme would have an adverse visual impact, and that there was “no identified local need” for the facility.

The parish council also felt the proposal could give rise to a potential traffic hazard on the A30 due to accidental windblown camping equipment from this exposed location of the site.
