A new development of up to 175 houses can go ahead in Callington, says Cornwall Council. An outline application for the scheme on land adjoining South Hill Road was approved by members of the Strategic Planning Committee last week. Callington Town Council had voted against the scheme, with the caveat that if it went ahead, members would like to see vehicular access from the Broadmead area severed, to address the concerns of residents. This request was heeded by the planners, who had discussed with the developer the possibility of limiting access for vehicles to South Hill Road only. Callington’s Cornwall Councillor Andrew Long, who spoke at the meeting, cast criticism on the way decisions on housing are made. ‘It is a sad indictment of our planning system here in Cornwall that once again a major application that builds houses before infrastructure is before you and, once again, there is little, if any, policy, either national or local, that could assist in refusing the application,’ he said. ‘It is a sad reflection on how planning has changed that we have to be thinking “what would an inspector do” rather than what is right for the community.’
