ONE win... that's all Plymouth Argyle need from tomorrow's trip to managerless Queens Park Rangers to maintain their Coca-Cola Championship status.
However, that one win is proving to be extremely elusive lately, as the Pilgrims could 'only' manage a 1-1 draw at ten-man Birmingham City, while last weekend's
3-0 hammering by Doncaster Rovers at Home Park was certainly not in the script.
Okay, so the Greens could stay up by default if Southampton fail to beat promotion-hopefuls Burnley and Norwich City leave Carrow Road empty-handed in Monday's clash with Reading (also among the play-off places).
But Paul Sturrock will be looking to put the issue to bed once and for all against QPR before the final outing of the season, home to Barnsley, who themselves are not yet safe. Sturrock was understandably disappointed with last weekend's defeat, admitting: 'We've done nothing different to any other week, training just the same.
'But we weren't out there and had one of our poorest games of the season.
'It just beggars belief – and that's now a mental approach the players are going to feel. There's no excuses today, it was one of the biggest games of the season and they came out with a lacklustre performance.'
Steve MacLean salvaged a point for the Pilgrims when Rangers visited Home Park back in December, and Argyle have not lost at Loftus Road in their last three trips.
QPR sacked Paulo Sousa earlier this month, after a disappointing campaign which saw the big-spenders unable to secure a play-off berth, and Gareth Ainsworth took over as caretaker boss until the end of the season.
The new manager watched his side lose 1-0 last weekend to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who secured their return to the Barclays Premier League.
Former Plymouth Argyle striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who was named the Coca-Cola Championship Player of the Season, bagged the all-important goal for Mick McCarthy's side at Molineux to spark a pitch invasion.
They now need only a point from their last two League matches – at Barnsley and home to Doncaster – to be confirmed as champions.
