PIRATE attacks on the Cornish coast in the 17th century are the inspiration for a thrilling new children’s adventure novel by a Portwrinkle author.
In Peter Gredan Davies’ book Pirates and Promises, the story begins when Cornish twins Becca and Jack save the life of a mysterious Lebanese prince Azfer Hakeem, who has been washed up on the beach near their village.
In return for their gesture, Azfer promises to help find the twins’ parents, who were captured by Barbary pirates and taken away across the ocean.
Daring
The twins set off towards the shores of North Africa with Azfer and his intrepid crew to attempt a daring rescue, facing storms and pirates along the way.
Peter says that his inspiration for penning the tale came when he learned about the Spanish attacks on Mousehole and Penzance in the late 16th century, along with the frequent assaults on the Cornish coastline carried out by North African pirates.
Retired teacher and former Royal Navy Instruction Officer Peter won an award for his debut children’s novel, Animal Team, in 2010.
