A KEEN runner whose event was cancelled by the coronavirus decided he would still run the distance for his good causes.

Like many others, Michael Wilton, from Saltash, was disappointed when the Plymouth Half Marathon had to be called off.

But he decided that he would carry on and run the 13.1 miles by completing 26 lengths – and a bit - of the Tamar Bridge, where the walkway is half a mile long.

Michael, who has raised more than £850 so far, explained: ’The two charities I am raising money for are Jeremiah’s Journey and Samaritans, both based in Plymouth. Jeremiah’s Journey is a Plymouth-based charity which supports children, young people and their families when a parent or carer is terminally ill,or when someone special to them has died. ’The Samaritans provide emotional support to anyone in distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide. My late Mother and Father were both volunteers for Samaritans in the 1970s.’

Michael, who already had two previous half marathons under his belt, managed a personal best of 2: 25 after his back and forth run on the Tamar Bridge.

Cheering him on were hi swife Jayne and 15-year-old daughter Erin, who provided drinks and moral support as well as keeping followers updated on social media.
