PENSILVA Youth Club held their annual Five-a-side tournament on June 3 and 4 and it again proved to be an overwhelming success.

A total of 72 teams entered the event and a continental flavour was added with the participation of French side Etoile St Roger.

The competition began with the U-10 age group and saw 12 sides battling to reign as champions for a year. Despite torrential rain the young players never allowed the weather to dampen their enthusiasm and after a well contested final it was Biscovey who emerged victorious over Pensilva.

In the afternoon more than 30 teams contested the U-11 and 12 trophies and thankfully the rain stopped. Once again the boys produced an enjoyable display of football and it was St Tudy who ran out winners at U-11, while Polkerris edged out Pensilva U-12.

On Sunday morning it was the turn of the U-13 and 14s to take the stage and both age groups put on a fine exhibition of attacking football.

Mount boys were crowned champions at the U-13 level with St Cleer reigning supreme at U-14.

The tournament was brought to a conclusion with the entry of the U-15 and 16 teams and it seemed to be a fitting climax when both the host sides won their respective cups.

Over 400 boys and girls participated in this event and they conducted themselves in a very sporting manner. This was never more evident than when Etoile St Roger chose to field only four players due to their opponents having been reduced to this number by injuries.

A special mention of thanks must go to Ray Brown and all the referees who gave their time voluntary and who officiated the matches with such good humour.

Pensilva Youth Management committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the following Millennium House, St Ive Parish Council, Pensilva Primary School, Lux Park Leisure Centre, Callington School, St John Ambulance Service, Sally and Chippy Wilson, Trudy and Tony Henwood, Dot Moore, Ilene Lehurary, Ann Day, Terese Hoare, Pam Hussyin and Lesley Cribb.
