MOTORISTS may not be faced with increased parking charges next month after Caradon District Councillors agreed to postpone a proposed price hike. Councillors on the Community Services Panel agreed to delay the introduction of major increases at Caradon-owned car parks throughout the district until detailed information on the proposals is submitted to a newly-formed task group. Increased parking charges of around 50 per cent in some areas were due to come into force on April 1. But if the task group do not prepare a report by this date, the proposed price increases will not come into effect. The district council is currently trying to compensate for a sizably reduced budget from central government and expects to lose around £10,000 a month without the increased charges. Caradon chairman cllr John Crago expressed his concerns with deferral as the budget for the forthcoming year has already been drawn up taking increased parking charges into account. After a heated debate, in which almost 30 objections to increased parking charges made by residents during a consultation period were presented, councillors at Monday's meeting agreed with cllr Roy Levack's proposal to form a sub- committee to receive full details on the proposed parking charges. A small Member Task Group will now be set up to review information on the existing charges, income profiles and charging strategy with a view to recommending any alterations or changes to the council by October.
