A MOTHER has spoken of the dilemma she faces after her 13-month-old baby was given the wrong childhood vaccination at her doctors' surgery.

Little Kaylee Rae Williams was due to have an MMR jab to protect her against measles, mumps and German measles but she was given a Hib injection instead – only five weeks after having her scheduled Hib injection to protect against meningitis.

Her parents, Gemma Gibbs, 26, and Leone Williams, 31, are now living with the consequences of the error made by a nursing sister at the Oaktree Surgery in Liskeard.

Gemma, speaking from the family home in Menheniot, said: 'Kaylee has been put at risk because of the mistake. The doctors at the surgery have said she can have the MMR jab now but there could be a risk because it is so close to the Hib injection. They can't guarantee there will be no reaction. The surgery has said that the MMR could be given safely in November.

'However, there is currently an outbreak of measles in the county – and measles could be life threatening. This has left us with a difficult decision to make. It's a big issue, really.'

There could also be problems in the longer term.

'We have also been told Kaylee won't be able to have her pre-school booster Hib injection. This mistake has messed her up,' said Gemma.

Gemma has had a meeting with staff at the surgery and has been promised that changes will be made. She is also complaining to the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

A spokesperson for the surgery said: 'We are aware of and are dealing with the incident.'
