One of the worst features of out of town superstores is that they locate themselves so as to favour only one section of the community, namely the vehicle owners. It's no pleasure for the elderly or any other pedestrians to journey to outlandish spots next to trunk roads and by-passes for basic provisions and if the loss of town shops forces them to do so they will feel like second-class shoppers.
Leaving aside the matter of the irreplaceable green landscape they are out to destroy, if Lidl truly wants to help the townsfolk why don't they apply for a site on, or close to Barras Street? This might mean their premises being a fraction smaller and their delivery trucks having to weigh a touch less but so what? Here, after all, is where the local bus routes converge and there are ready-made car parks in plenty. There is adequate space, too, if only more of it were to be released for retail. As it is we have Webb's key corner site utterly wasted, whilst the cattle market area lies almost deserted five or six days a week.
With an excellent new-look Parade now crying out for commerce, where is the logic in allowing a food shed out at Tencreek Farm?
