Online and outdoor-based activities will be the focus of a heritage event in Liskeard this weekend.

Liskeard Unlocked is part of the national Heritage Open Days Festival, which runs from September 11-20.

In a normal year, intriguing glimpses into the past are offered as properties open up their doors to areas usually out of bounds to the public.

The theme chosen this year is ‘Hidden Nature’ and it’s the town’s parks, gardens and outdoor spaces that will take centre stage. With a mind to the COVID-19 precautions, rather than tours of buildings, there will be photographs and details of some of the properties on display in the Public Hall. You can also take online video tours of some of the buildings that would normally be open to the public at https://www.visitliskeard.co.uk/view-event/liskeard-unlocked-heritage-open-days-4/

While the physical walks in town are now fully booked, there’s plenty more to get involved with.

There’ll be the chance to find out about the wildlife improvements in Castle Park and take part in a family nature trail, or have a go at macro photography. Supported by Rich Lawrence photography, Liskeard and District Museum will be at Castle Park between 12 noon and 4pm to help people learn using their phones or cameras. The Museum is also collecting macro nature photos captured in around Liskeard for an exhibition and art project – send your shots to [email protected]

At St Martin’s Church, find out about plans to ‘rewild’ the churchyard for the benefit of nature.

Meanwhile in the Cattle Market, there’ll be an open-air exhibition showcasing the history of the market and the plans for its transformation happening alongside the Liskeard Food Market.

Online talks on Liskeard’s Wool industry and Stuart House will be happening tonight and on Sunday – to book onto either of these, go to the Liskeard Town Council Facebook Page or website.

Films of the winding of the Guildhall Clock and a driver’s eye view of the Looe Valley line can be viewed at any time.
