A dad who was told he might have just months to live plans to celebrate an anniversary he thought would never come with a music festival – and raise funds for the fight against cancer.
The one-day event in Downderry is being organised by Roland Monger for March 25 – a year after he was diagnosed with skin cancer
He describes it as ’a day of music, fun, laughter and togetherness to raise cash and awareness around skin cancer but also to appreciate what we’ve got in our lives, right here, right now.’
A host of local bands and performers have signed up to perform at the Inn on the Shore in Downderry, near Roland’s home, and raise funds for St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth, where Roland had treatment and support.
He is now having three-monthly check-ups and it will be 10 years before he can be considered ‘free’ from cancer if there are no more flare-ups.
‘Music is the natural choice for me,’ said Roland, ‘as I spend most of my time blogging as Listen With Monger (listenwithmonger.blogspot. co.uk) so I hope we can all come together to celebrate music and be thankful for what we have – family, friends and good times.’
Roland, who works in the admissions department at Plymouth University, has also chronicled his battle against cancer and much besides at ididitsite.wordpress. com/2016/03/
There’s free admission to the One Day Festival at the Inn on the Shore, Downderry, on Saturday, March 25, from 2pm. Donations are welcome in support of St Luke’s Hospice.
There’ll be music from: St Germans-based The Ha Has; Phat Bollard; Nick Gladdish; Mark Cornwall; The Busketeers; Jamie Yost; Joanna Clarke; Gozer Goodspeed; Saltash-based singer-songwriter Paul Armer; and the Deviock Community Music Group.
