Once more we have proof that the reliance on tourism to boost the economy just doesn't work.

Adverse publicity about overcrowding may have kept a lot away from the eclipse, but in the end it was the weather that really killed it. People came, but they went straight home after the eclipse because the weather was bad. And few spent money on anything other than petrol or the odd cup of tea or sandwiches. We can't help the weather, and many visitors understand this and love Cornwall whatever the heavens give us.

But surely we must stop thinking that tourism is the answer to our unemployment problem and should certainly not be the only criteria for the regeneration of our towns.
