It doesn't seem to occur to all those who write to the paper objecting to plans for a supermarket in Looe that there are a lot of people who are not able to afford to shop locally, as much as they would like to.
I've heard people say that those who support a big supermarket will ruin the town just for the sake of saving a few pounds a week.
Well I'm sorry to inform them that for some people saving a few pounds a week is vital.
It might be alright for retired people with good pensions and those who own businesses, they can pay higher prices. But those who need every penny each week can't.
For instance, I buy up to ten loaves of sliced bread each week, costing around £2 if I buy supermarket low cost bread. I would like to buy bread at around 70p a loaf in a good bakers but that would be £7 a week. Just for one item I save £5. Other supermarket brands can save me at least £10 a week sometimes more.
Those who keep campaigning to keep supermarkets out must realise that for an ordinary family struggling to make ends meet £10 a week saving is a lot of money . They have the choice to stay with small local shops, most of us don't.
I don't suppose I'm alone in getting angry when I read that a certain section of people keep saying 'we don't want a supermarekt in Looe' when what they really mean is they don't.
