A mystery baker has baffled a town by leaving freshly baked bread on people's doorsteps. The night-time deliveries arrive in brown paper bags with a compliment slip that has a picture of a hooded figure and is signed by 'the Phantom Bread Maker of Old Fowey Town'.
After three such deliveries Fowey town crier Michael Penprase (above) is still totally bemused. The mystery baker claims to be a 'true friend' who knows him well.
'We have got no idea whatsoever who it is from,' he said. 'It is a complete mystery.'
Mr Penprase was on holiday in Tenerife when the first parcel, containing three freshly baked loaves, arrived on his doorstep. A few days after his return another package was received and he put a jovial note in his window asking for the loaves to be sliced. The latest batch arrived yesterday morning and two of them, as requested, were sliced!
Lee Taylor from the Galleon Inn, Fowey, is among others to have received the surprise parcels.
He received a batch last week and said it was 'a complete mystery' as to who had left it there.
'It was on the doorstep in a brown envelope addressed personally to me,' he said.
'It was delicious.'
