REGARDING the future success of St Matthews Fair: while it was pleasing to read in the Cornish Times that the fair was a success due to the efforts of Philip Hunt, Liskeard Lions, Liskeard Chamber of Commerce, John Batley of Stuart House and many other hardworking people, possibly some of the more obvious points have been overlooked. The escalating cost of living and unwarranted increases in taxation must be contributing factors to people's ability to attend, participate and be consumers at such events – therefore customers have to be sourced from others areas. Possibly attendance at such events could be increased by the provision of free car parking, made clear via the South West media. Such events should provide the opportunity to sell the produce and services of local businesses and local people to the wider world. The continental traders sent out a clear message of positive action. Healthy trade makes for increased profits and increased employment. So with the continental traders making positive gains, why where our local food, drink and clothing manufacturers and other service providers under- represented. South East Cornwall has many truly remarkable small businesses which should be in the frontline of the once-a-year trading and marketing opportunity afforded to them. The once-per-year opportunity is not just about making a profit on the day, it is about long-term sales strategies, showing one's wares, making contacts, offering accommodation and having fun. It is a shame for local manufacturers, service providers, the charitable sector and local people to let the opportunity pass by. The town centre traders can support the St Matthews fair day outdoor traders by decorating their shops, running competitions, offering sample free taster sessions and providing entertainment. The people of South East Cornwall have to be creative and competitive if they want to be winners. Quality of life can only be achieved by working and playing for it!
