Youngsters who end up in Derriford Hospital’s new Paediatric Emergency Department can now have more fun thanks to a fundraising appeal.

The SplashED appeal has raised over £14,000 for the new unit at Derriford.

The appeal has had many generous supporters including Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia, Dr Michelle Chopra, who completed a sponsored one kilometre swim dressed in a unicorn onesie raising nearly £300.

The money is being used to purchase items for fun activities to help keep children calm and distract them while they wait in the children’s Emergency Department. The League of Friends donated a ‘Magic Carpet’ which projects interactive games onto a flat surface. Hundreds of different visual stimulus can be programmed into the projector, providing a fun activity for children, whilst keeping the floor space clear.

Plymouth Hospitals Charity Development Manager, Corinne Bailey said: ‘Coming into hospital can be a very scary experience for many children so to be able to buy toys and resources that can distract children from their worries and tears is brilliant for everyone involved.’
