Liskeard/Looe U-8s stood firm against a massed attack from Penzance Pirates after an exhilarating match at Penzance on Sunday. The away team of 13 players faced a 30-strong opposition in a fast and furious match that capitalised on rolling substitutes and adroit refereeing. The first game was against Penzance U-7s, which saw a surprisingly disciplined Liskeard side quickly score two tries after the Pirates first break. James De Frame proved to be a particularly valuable asset whose great pace scored a further two tries and helped set up another. Rugged defence by the refreshed Pirates in the second half proved of little consolation and a weary but elated Liskeard side romped home with a 6-2 victory.

The second game against a fresh (and bigger) U-8s side provided a huge challenge for Liskeard. The match was hard fought with both sides defending extremely well which led to some inspirational tries by both teams. Thomas Hancock's tackling was especially effective in defence of the Liskeard line and Christian Francis' supporting play is most worthy of note. The score for the second game was 2-2. Man of the Match goes to Jake McKay whose spectacular try (and subsequent winding!) characterised the determination of the Liskeard side.

The team consisted of: Thomas Demaine, Lucy Demaine, Thomas Hancock, Jake McKay, Carlin Champion, Adam Bambridge, Ben Surman, James De Frame, Giel Spierings, Charlie Brown, Colm Moran, Christian Francis and Peter Watt. The next match is away against Launceton on Sunday 6 Feb 00.
