An emergency services crew’s mighty moustaches have helped to bring in more than £1000 as the Movember campaign reaches its half way point.
Liskeard Fire Station is currently the second-best fire station in the country in terms of its fundraising for Movember, the annual event to raise awareness and funding for men’s health issues and male suicide.
‘We’re just behind Ryde Blue Watch on the Isle of Wight, who have raised £1400,’ said Liskeard firefighter Graham Smith.
‘We’re determined to overtake them, so we hope that everyone will get behind our fundraising for the rest of the month.’
As well as growing a variety of resplendent moustaches, the crew at Liskeard plan to complete a 60kilometre indoor row, with each kilometre representing one of the 60 men who commit suicide every hour around the world. They’ll be rowing on machines in the foyer of Liskeard Morrisons on Friday November 22.
On Friday November 29, an open evening at the community fire station will be the last big push to raise as much Movember sponsorship as possible.
During the event from 4 - 6.30pm, there will be the chance for members of the public to take fun selfies with fake moustaches and firemen’s helmets, to be uploaded to a special gallery.
Four local charities will be there to let people know how they offer support: The Chestnut Appeal for prostate cancer - who will be bringing a nurse to answer questions and give advice; the Cornwall Man Down mental health charity; the Tamar Area Prostate Support (TAPS) group; and First Light, an organisation offering support on domestic and sexual violence.
Anyone who’d like to donate to Liskeard Fire Station should go to the Facebook page and follow the link to Movember fundraising.
