A Lanreath woman has been presented with the French Legion d’Honneur on behalf of her father. Ernest Peters, from Pelynt, was a radio telegraphist on board the Torpedo boat MTB 239 on June 6, 1945. His boat patrolled the English Channel protecting vessels taking part in the D-Day landings from enemy attack. Ernest had received his Legion d’honneur medal through the post from the French government at the start of this year, but ill health had prevented him from attending a presentation ceremony in Truro with other Second World War veterans. On April 22, at the age of 93, Ernest passed away. Upon hearing this news, Cornwall’s honorary French consul Andrew Munson decided it was right to attend Ernest’s funeral, and present the medal officially to Ernest’s daughter Angela.
