Etta and Charles were forced to move back to Millbrook in 1941 after enemy bombs destroyed their house, they had a lucky escape. Etta was to have another escape in July 1995 when the house adjoining Dawes cottage caught fire and spread into Etta's bedroom from where she was rescued. Etta, with the help of her husband, looked after her disabled sister Hilda for 25 years. Etta was a regular member of the congregation at Millbrook Methodist Church.
