Torpoint mayor Julie Martin aims to raise more than £2,000 for her two nominated charities before the end of her first year in office. The two charities are the Stillbirth and Neo-natal Death Society (SANDS) and SCOPE. SANDS provides sensitive and practical support for more than 4,000 families every year who lose a baby before, during or soon after birth. SCOPE is the disability organisation in England and Wales whose focus is on people with cerebral palsy. Since the beginning of the civic year last May, a total of £1,486.90 has been raised. The mayor said: 'I would especially like to thank the Torpoint Lady Singers and the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir, who gave the proceeds of their Christmas concert to the fund. 'Also, Bertha and Eric Duguid who gave a donation raised by "Bertha's Babes", their sequence dancing group. It would be great if I could reach £2,000.' The Mayor's Charity Ball is on Saturday, February 25, at the Town Hall, starting at 7pm. There is a four-course dinner with wine and dancing to Cats Eyes. Only a few tickets remain. The following day, the mayor is hosting her charity tea dance from 2.30pm until 5.30pm Tickets are still available at £3 and this includes a cream tea.
