A MAN died after he jumped off the Tamar Bridge and landed in a garden. The man is the first person to have jumped from the bridge since high fence panels were introduced. The fence panels were put in place as a safety measure to deter people from jumping when two cantilever lanes were added in 2001. However, the man was seen climbing the fencing at 7.30am by a cyclist crossing the bridge. Residents now feel the safety measures may have to be looked at again. 'It was an unfortunate incident,' said a spokesman for Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Joint Ferry Committee. 'We constantly measure safety issues but if someone is going to try and commit suicide then they will find a means of doing it.' As the Cornish Times went to print the dead man had yet to be formally identified.
