Leavers' service was also Maggie's farewell
St Winnow school leavers' service proved not only to be an end-of-term service, but also the final such event for staff member of nearly 20 years, Maggie Edwards.
Entertainment was provided by the violin, recorder and dance groups with presentations being made for swimming achievements.
The term team points cup went to St Nectan, who also took the year team pints cup. Winners of the team points for the term were: Infant: St Winnow Grace Stephens, St Saviour Shanna Searle, St Nectan Patrick Smith and Olivia Watkins; Middle class: St Winnow Jamie Allen, St Saviour Kirsty Carthew, St Nectan Tom Howard; Junior class: St Winnow Sam Connely, St Saviour Hannah Carless, St Nectan Rebecca Jackson. Most improved swimmer award went to Rebecca Jackson, the most improved athlete to Zoe Bromley-Fox and the Endeavour cup for the year five child who has endeavoured to do well throughout the year went to Sam Connely.
The new Golden Trowel trophy for enthusiasm in the gardening club went to Hannah Carless, with dance club certificates for improvement and achievement going to Zoe Bromley-Fox, Zoe Porrington, Carla Rodgers, Hayley Byrnes, Chandini Thomas, Erin Porrington, Esme Owen and Hannah Carless. Cyclewise certificates were awarded to Sam Black, Hayley Byrnes, Kerry Tregonning, Tris Conway, Rachel Goodman, Matthew Hutchings and Arron Read. The Burness Bunn trophy for literacy, an essay competition open to all schools in the Lostwithiel area, was won by Sam Connely. The infant art cup was awarded by Jessica Greenhalgh, by Maggie Edwards, who herself was presented with farewell gifts from the chair of the school association, Gina O'Keefe. These included a gas barbecue and a photo album of memories of Maggie's 20 years at the school. Rev Fred Stevens also thanked her for her work at St Winnow, and presented her with a gift from St Winnow parish.
Head teacher, Diane Strawbridge, wished Maggie good luck in her promotion to the headship of Darite school.
The year six children who were moving on to Fowey community college next term sang a rap song. They included Sam Black, Tristram Conway, Sacha Harman, Matthew Hutchings, Lauren Kelly, Arron Read, Carla Rodgers, Katie Rollings and Kerry Tregonning.
