THE Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Association's season is now in full swing and clubs from Devon and Dorset, as well as throughout the Duchy, flocked to Looe last Saturday for the club's annual regatta – and a chance to have a glimpse at Looe's new Seafront boathouse.

Once the action was over, the gigs were loaded back on their trailers to head off for the Helford River event at Helford Passage, on the north side of the Helford River, near Mawnan Smith, just outside of Falmouth, last Sunday.

Tomorrow sees a return to East Cornwall, with Saltash likely to witness a record entry of 125 crews from all over Cornwall, Devon and Dorset for the Tribute Mixed and Veterans' Gig Championships, organised by members of the Caradon Pilot Gig Rowing Club, who are working hard in collaboration with the Saltash Town Regatta Committee.

The category of races are Mixed (three men and three women); Men's Veterans, Women's Veterans and Mixed Veterans (all for the over-40s), and Men's and Women's Supervets (for the over-50s).

As in previous years the event coincides with Saltash Town Regatta, so as well as the gig racing there will be a Continental Market, a Cornish Produce Market, an art and craft fair, children's entertainment and much more.

The coxswains' meeting will be held at 8.30 am, with the first race at 9.00 am prompt.

The final race is scheduled for 6.00 pm, with the presentations at 6.30 pm.

But back to Looe, where the host club's under-14s dominated a busy programme, winning their third race out in a row.

There have only been four under-14 events on the Pilot Gig calendar so far this season and, as well as Looe's top crew, their second string of under-14 rowers also came fifth in what was their first competitive race.

The Cornwall Under-14 Championships will be held at Hayle next month and, if Looe's progress continues, the club should be able to send three crews to the event.

'That would be really excellent news,' said club secretary Martin White, 'especially when you bear in mind that all the crews are made up of local kids.'

Mr White was delighted with the regatta and the turn-out of visiting clubs who always like to come to the holiday resort's regatta.

'I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the regatta, either helping on the day or in the build-up,' he said.

'And I'd especially like to express our gratitude to local businesses and organisations, including the East Looe Town Trust and Looe Harbour Commissioners, whose cooperation was not only much appreciated but also essential in enabling our regatta to proceed so smoothly.'
