Commitment day
before big project
There is to be a special commitment day as a pre-launch for the huge repair and refurbishment project to be undertaken at St Martin's Parish Church at a cost of £450,000.
It is hoped that on the day, tomorrow, between 10am-4pm, people will come forward to offer their help in a variety of ways, from joining a new appeals committee, coming up with fundraising ideas, to making donations if they so wish.
Parish administrator Roger Perkins said: 'We are looking for residents to commit to cash or skills. At the moment we are also short of committee people.'
Mr Perkins says the church is also keen for people to undertake sponsored events as they are good fundraisers, but often the more interesting ones need to have money put up front first.
'We will consider taking the risk and providing the money if we are to be supported,' he said.
The work to be undertaken by the Parish of St Martins with St Nicholas is seen as a project which it is hoped all the community will feel able to support in some way, to help preserve the building not only for today but for future generations to come. A sum in the region of £150,000 will have to be raised by the parish before any grants can be applied for.
On Sunday, there is to be a combined praise service for all ages at St Martin's at 10.30am, followed by the official opening of the new parish office by Mayor Wally Scarah. A celebration faith luncheon will follow.
