Rowers prepare for

world championships

LOOE Rowing Club are now getting under way in preparation for the 2002 season and many of the rowers are looking forward to their annual trip to the Scillies for the World Championships during the May Bank Holiday, always a highlight.

Another looked forward to row is the London River Race which takes place in September. Last year the club were sponsored over the 22 mile stretch of the River Thames from Richmond to the Isle of Dogs, raising £900 for the Children's Hospice South West, St Martin's Church and the Rowing Club itself.

The rowers are hugely grateful to Ken Rowe of Rowe's Garages, who for the second time lent the club a vehicle to tow their boat all the way to London and back.

This season the club's committee have a problem, albeit a pleasant one! They have so many rowers turning up on training nights there is not enough time to get them all out during the time available. They are therefore looking for help. If any ex-flashboat rowers could commit one evening each week from now until September, the club could launch more than one boat at once and therefore get more crews on to the water, cutting down waiting times.

They would also like to be able to bring on junior rowers to replenish the under 16 crew who are looking forward to another very successful season. Training nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays and the club hopes to be able to re-launch its popular Wednesday night sessions for non-competitive rowers. The club's policy is that the more people are involved in rowing, the more opportunities there are for everyone.

Anyone who would like to offer help should contact Pauline Tamlin on 01503 265204, or Carolyn Bassett on 01503 264644 for further details.
