Dance pupils'
special evening
THERE was an audience of over 300 for the third annual presentation evening of Sheila's School of Dancing, Looe, when the mayor and mayoress, Wally and Kate Scarah, were also in attendance and presented the awards recently gained by the pupils.
Mrs Marye Simmons from the NATD visited the School in May and conducted 200 medal tests ranging from Rainbow to Silver. All pupils passed with many gaining Highly Commended.
Money raised from the sale of tickets was presented to local funds - one in memory of Leanne Dodge and Jacqueline Mitchell, and also for Derriford Special Baby Unit in memory of Thomas Libby.
Ranging from 4-18 years, 105 young people performed a variety of dance routines choreographed by Sheila Brock and her assistants. They were colourful and full of energy and some of the mothers did a great job with make up and hair. The routines included disco, club, rock'n'roll and Latin American. Mike Purdy, assisted by Daniel Bond, did the lighting and sound, and the Friends of Looe School provided a bar.
It was a sad evening for Sheila as three of her dancers - Caroline Dellanno, Courtney Perry and Janine Carthew - who had been with the dance school since it opened 7 years ago - were leaving to go to university. With four other girls they performed to 'America' from West Side Story and a modern hit, Lady Marmalade. Sheila presented them with bouquets and her thanks.
Chairman of Looe and Polperro Chamber of Commerce, Edwina Arkell, presented the award to someone who had shown commitment and support to the School. It went to Mrs Alice Sargent who had helped in many capacities over six years as her grand daughters are in the School.
After thanking everyone for their support and help, Dancer of the Year, Emma Haines, presented the mayoress with a bouquet, and Sheila also received flowers from the girls.
Charity bowls
for Hospice
A charity bowls drive organised by members of Looe Bowling Club, was recently held in aid of Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. An enjoyable event it raised £200.
Thanks were expressed to all bowlers and friends for their support and also to the Looe Hospice fundraising branch for providing a most welcome tea for everyone.
President Doreen Bilkey (Cornwall County Women's Bowling Association) was in attendance and presented Looe member Madge White with her honorary life membership badge of the CCWBA.
Winners of the bowls drive, men's and women's, were Nino Gloria and Mollie Mallett, and runners up were Paul Arnold and Marie Cowley.
Bangers and Mash
THE Looe branch of the East Cornwall Conservative Association held their annual Bangers and Mash evening on the lawns of Porthallow End, Talland.
Due to the number of people in attendance a third gazebo had to be erected, and as it was such a warm evening the bangers were barbecued by 'chef' John Shearsmith. A great success, the evening raised considerable funds for the Association.
The next social event will be a cream tea at Green Borders, Hannafore, West Looe, on Thursday, August 16.
