Access to

the Internet

CORNWALL'S library service has combined with Link into Learning to provide customers with access to the Internet to two computers in Looe library.

Anyon Nazir, temporary manager of Looe library, says the new computers are proving popular with both local people looking for information and with holiday-makers keeping up to date with their e-mail.

Customers are able to surf the net and send and receive e-mails at a charge of £1.50 per half hour for non members and £1 for library members. Those in receipt of certain means tested benefits can do so free.

Before the summer break, at the end of July, Link into Learning had been offering basic skills training in the library.

Looe port to benefit

from fishing funds

TEN projects in Cornwall have been awarded European and DEFRA grant funds totalling nearly £90,000 to assist the development of Cornwall's fishing industry - the first projects to be awarded funds in the UK.

The port of Looe is to be among the beneficiaries of the funding. The projects gaining grants are wide-ranging, including assisting fishermen, fishermen's organisations, port authorities, and aquaculture businesses. Fishermen have also gained funding to improve fish quality on board their vessels and crew comfort.

A grant has been awarded to a local mussel producer to help clean and grade the product for market, while Mevagissey, together with Looe, will receive funds for port facilities.

Alison Elvey, Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager commented: 'It has taken a while to get the Objective 1 fisheries programme off the ground, but due to the hard work of the Cornish fishing partnerships and DEFRA, Cornwall is proud to announce it is the first in the UK to approve projects.

'There is £5 million to spend over the next three years and it's hoped more projects will come forward now that industry members are benefiting from the programme.'.

Age Concern cheque for St John

THE magnificent sum of £1,000 has been presented by the members of Looe Age Concern to the Looe Division of St John Ambulance.

The money was raised by donations, coffee mornings, raffles and many other events including a 'pop in' at Looe Social Club every Tuesday which is open to all.

The Group says the money was donated to St John because the Looe Division is totally self funding and all donations received stay in the town for the benefit of the whole community.

In accepting the cheque, Divisional Supt Mrs Ann Tomkinson said that because of the Foot and Mouth crisis many of the events the division normally attends had been cancelled, so little money had been raised this year.

'This generous donation will be used to purchase much needed equipment, as well as being used for the day to day expenses of running the ambulance, the building, qualified adult members, and the Cadets and Badgers' she said.
