Hundreds visit
seafront display
HUNDREDS of local people visited the three day exhibition last week, staged in a caravan on the quayside by East Looe Town Trust and Caradon Council, of the proposed seafront enhancement scheme.
The visitors were able to look at the plans and to fill in forms stating their opinions. There was an excellent response with more than three hundred being received back. These are now being collated by Caradon who will produce a report for the special committee set up by the Trustees to spearhead the scheme.
Trust vice chairman Wally Scarah said the overall feeling from the public was that they were vastly in favour of the seafront project. 'People realise that it is important to keep areas updated and most agree that the seafront is now looking a bit jaded' he said. 'There was also quite a lot of comment about the toilets with requests for it to be included within a more modern building, or the present facilities to be modernised and re-furbished'.
The feasibility study, carried out by W S Atkins, received grant aid of £50,000 from the Key Fund, and further grants for the £1.75 million scheme will now be sought. The Trustees say they would like to express their thanks for the co-ordination and help by Caradon, in particular Mr David Moore.
Wooldown welcome
for butterflies
THERE has been a good response from nearby residents and walkers to the efforts by East Looe Town Trust to tidy up the Wooldown area. The Trust says much of the work is being done in paring back overgrown hedges and brambles before the birds start nesting. New bushes and shrubs are also being planted to attract butterflies to the area, and the grass is being regularly cut.
'People have made comments that the Wooldown is looking better already' said a Trustee.
Harbour's help
for Bloomers
THE Harbour Commissioners have been helping the Looe In Bloom effort by donating 20 flower boxes to be placed around the town. They were specially made by staff member Danny Webb in the harbour work shop.
The harbour have also agreed to offer the Bloomers the use of the fresh supply on the quay for their water bowser.
Russian singing
was memorable
AN appreciative audience at St Martin's Parish Church on Thursday last, were captivated by the fine voices of a group of Russian singers, who were visiting Looe as part of their tour of the South West. Known as the 'Russicum Singers', the ensemble hails from St Petersburg and the Ukraine.
The programme, sung unaccompanied, was in two halves, the first devoted to Russian Orthodox church music, highlighted by the renditions from the soloists. The concluding half featured Russian and Ukranian folk songs which delighted the audience. The singing was of an exceptionally high standard, with the singers being of high repute in their homeland.
The ensemble were introduced and thanked by Rev Linda Smith for a memorable performance. They were presented with donations and were guests of the church at a dinner following the recital.
