Thanks from

the RNLI

A coffee morning at the Guildhall on Saturday last organised by the Looe branch of the RNLI, raised £200 for funds. Sue Timmins thanks everyone for their continuing generous support on behalf of all the committee members.

Presenters asked

to scale down plans

CARADON councillors have asked television presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan to scale down a conservatory they have applied for at their Talland Bay home.

Members of the planning control committee (west) have asked for the proposed conservatory to be made smaller so that it is less prominent, and so impacts less on nearby properties.

Richard and Judy have applied for a large, two-storey, fully-glazed conservatory, the plans for which passed through the parish council with no objections. The matter will next be discussed at the next planning control committee (west) on February 15.

Playgroup

fundraisers

WEST Looe Playgroup have two events coming up to raise funds for equipment for their new outside play area. The first is tomorrow (Saturday) February 2, when they are holding a coffee morning from 10am-12 noon at the Guildhall, East Looe. Admission is 50p to include refreshments and there will be a variety of stalls to include nearly new, toys and bric a brac.

A Valentine's disco is the next fundraiser on Sunday next, February 11, at the Waterfront Complex at Millendreath, from 2pm - 4.30pm, in conjunction with Barbican Pre School. Fancy dress is optional and there will be prizes and competitions. Admission is just £1 per child and adults free.

Property

appeal

AN appeal has been made to the Secretary of State under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, over the refusal by Caradon Planners to allow the construction of a detached dwelling on the site of a storage building/car parking bay, on land situated at Bayview, West Looe Hill, Looe.

Mr K Eason has lodged the appeal, to be heard by February 27, after the Caradon decision which stated the proposed dwelling was considered to be an overdevelopment of the site, causing unacceptable loss of privacy and amenity to the existing property, and creating a form of backland development.

Among the grounds of appeal are that the site is one of the very few sites along the south side of the Downs, which has a double width and an existing building upon it, and no precedent would be set. It also says the proposed site coverage is 37 per cent, leaving a garden space of 168 sq metres, which is far in excess of the 66 square metres recommended in the Caradon Design Guide. The proposed house has no windows directly overlooking the existing property which is in the applicant's ownership. There would be extensive landscaping to create a degree of privacy.

'Shy' Alan is

rocking on

A member of the former Bir-mingham group 'Shy', now disbanded, has started making a name for himself again, this time as a vocalist/guitarist, since moving to East Looe last summer.

Thirty seven year old Alan Kelly has been entertaining local audiences of all ages with covers of popular songs from the 50's and right through every decade up to the present time. He has been building up a reputation for himself in many pubs, clubs and camp sites around the area.

While with Shy, Alan made five albums on the MCA and RCA labels, one of them being produced by Roy Thomas-Baker, who did much work with Queen, and was responsible for the production of Bohemian Rhapsody.

The group toured all over Europe and the USA, and also played as supporting artists to such stars as Bon Jovi, Gary Moore and Meatloaf.

Roadshow all

set to roll

FORTY local organisations have taken up the offer from the East Looe Town Trust to take part in a two day roadshow - Tuesday and Wednesday February 20 and 21 - in the Public Hall and Council Chamber at the Guildhall.

They have been invited to set up stands free of charge, to advertise what they do so that local residents are fully informed about the various clubs and organisations they might wish to join.

All available spaces are now fully booked with a waiting list, so popular is the concept, first suggested by Trustee Frances Kenshole.

BBC Spotlight's weatherman, and long time resident, Craig Rich, will open the roadshow on the first day at 9.45am, and the event will run each day from 10am - 9pm.

The half term break has been deliberately chosen in the hope that as many young people as possible will also attend to see what Looe has to offer them.

Shipmates' welcome

THE Looe branch of the Royal Naval Assocation is extending a warm welcome to all its members and those interested in the organisation, to attend the annual meeting at the Social Club, West Looe, on Wednesday, February 14. The meeting commences at 8pm.

THE Looe Valley Singers are holding a coffee morning on Friday February 9 downstairs in the Guildhall, East Looe. The event begins at 10.30am and is for choir funds.
