Bishop Bill
at harvest
TALLAND parish church was beautifully decorated by members of the congregation for the harvest festival service on Sunday last, which was conducted by the Bishop of Truro, the Rt Rev Bill Ind. Polperro baker David Pengelly made loaves in the shape of sheaves of corn especially for the occasion.
A procession at the beginning of the service included Polperro Brownies and Guides who presented their standards to the Vicar, Father William Braviner, and children and adults bringing harvest gifts.
A special feature was from pupils from Polperro Primary School who told the story of the journey of food from its source to our plates, including the tale of a pint of milk.
Favourite harvest hymns were sung accompanied by the church organist Julian Sturdy from Menheniot.
The service was followed by an enjoyable shared lunch in the function room of Talland Barton Caravan Park by kind permission of owners Rob and Sandra Heywood.
Parish lunch
raised £500
THE Cottage Restaurant in The Coombes, Polperro, played host on Sunday to a luncheon in aid of Talland parish churches, which raised £500. The event was sold out with about 40 diners enjoying home made vegetable soup, a delicious chicken main course, and blackcurrant meringue.
Many thanks were accorded owners Pam and Dave Foster for their generosity in donating the meals as they have done at such events in the past. They will also be giving a dinner in the near future to help raise funds for the Polperro branch of the RNLI, another annual event.
Trust's roadshow
EAST Looe Town Trust have welcomed an initiative put forward by Trustee Frances Kenshole. She has drawn up a list of more than 80 groups and organisations within the town and suggests that an event in the form of a roadshow should be held, with an invitation to the community to come along and find out what they are all about.
The Trust will be holding the roadshow over two days in February 2001, and would like any interested groups to contact the clerk, Mrs Pat Parry, at the Guildhall office, or tel 01503 263709. Each group will be given their own table space free of charge.
New faces at
the Post Office
MILTON Keynes couple Colin and Sandra Lambert and their 14 year old daughter Natalie, who is already settling into Liskeard School , will be taking over the running of West Looe Post Office from November 1st. It is a new venture for them, which they hope will take them up to retirement, as they say they now want to put down roots in an area where there is much more community life.
It also brings them closer to members of their family, Sandra's brothers being Clive Gardner, of 'Clive's Cats' fame, and David Gardner, the hardworking secretary of Looe Town Forum.
For Colin, formerly the general manager of an IT Company, the move represents his wish to come back to the sea. He first came to Cornwall when at 16 he joined the Royal Navy and trained at Torpoint's Raleigh Base . He also received training as a diver at HMS Drake and served 11 years in the Service all told. Before the move Sandra was the sales and development manager of a training company.
The couple first saw the Post Office was up for sale when they visited Looe at Easter, and when they came back for the Festival of the Sea in June and saw it was still on the market, they made an on the spot decision to buy it. 'It will be a totally different lifestyle for us' said Colin, 'and we are very much looking forward to being part of Looe'.
