Jigsaw mural

ONE thousand years of the history of Looe is to be depicted in a huge 'jigsaw mural' to be erected on the first building next to the Buller car park, on the wall facing the river.

A community project in celebration of the millennium, all organisations and individuls in the town are being invited to contribute to the 40ft by 6ft work of art, from the RNLI, OCS and U3A to schools and playgroups, in fact anyone who has suggestions and would like to contribute.

The idea of Town Forum secretary David Gardner, who is the project organiser, the mural, when finished, will show different aspects of the history and heritage of Looe, including religion, early history involving forays by the Vikings and Turks, trading by the Phonoecians, the Spanish Armada and pirates, the fishing industry, mining, boatbuilding, the RNLI and recent history such as the Banjo Pier and the new bridge.

The initial work on the mural is set to begin as part of the Caradon Arts Festival from Monday-Saturday, October 16-21, at workshops to be held in The Island Bar at The Hannafore Point Hotel, under the guidance of a workshop leader between 10.30am-2pm each day. During the week participants of all age groups will have the opportunity of developing ideas and making up some suitable preliminary art work, using all forms of media. 'No special art skills are required just plenty of enthusiasm and ideas' says David. 'This is everyone's opportunity to contribute to a permanent record of Looe's fascinating past'.

The workshops culminate on October 21 as part of the National Big Draw Day, when people all over the country are being invited under expert instruction to 'have a go' and have it proved to them that everyone can draw after all!An application for funding towards the Looe Jigsaw Mural Project is beinng made to Awards for All which is a Lottery Grant.

Once funding has been achieved for the main project the production of the final art work will be organised by professionals so that it will have coherence and unity.
