Lunch-time for Limpets

The Looe Limpets recently held their autumn lunch at Tom Sawyers, Hannafore, with a party of about 40 having an enjoyable time. Chief Limpet Norman Fielden was presented with a mounted South African limpet shell by two members, and on display was an interesting Antipodean Limpet.

Good wishes were extended to Limpet Vicki, shortly leaving Looe for Spain, and to Limpet Nancy, recovering from illness. Mr Fielden read a poem recounting the virtues of taverns and Fred Leese gave the vote of thanks to management and staff at Sawyers.

RBL thanks

Chairman of Looe branch Royal British Legion, Ron Overd, reports a most successful coffee morning which raised funds for service charities, and thanks everyone who supported the event.

Poetry for Looe

Lifeboat helm David Haines wants to remind everyone about the book 'Poetry for Looe and You', which is on sale at the RNLI souvenir shop on Middleton's corner.

It has been written by Pearl Mansell of Exeter, a frequent visitor to Looe over the years. In fact this summer she has enjoyed swimming in the bay with another regular visitor in port - Nelson the one eyed seal. She also loves to fish, and generally goes out with David and also John Bettinson, dedicating to both of them the poem "Golden Sea". Many more poems in this delightful little book are dedicated to folk in and around Looe and Polperro.

The book is priced at £2.50 and for every copy sold 25p is donated to the work of the RNLI.

Bloomers plant the Zig Zag

East Looe Town Trust have accepted an offer from members of Looe In Bloom who are willing to tackle the problem of planting the area of land leading from the sea defences up to East Cliff known as the Zig Zag. When the defences were built much of the top soil was removed and despite efforts from the Trust nothing much has been able to grow there since.

The South East Cornwall Tourist Association (SECTA) has donated £150 towards the purchase of suitably hardy plants, which has been matched by the Trust, and other organisations in the town are also considering some financial help to upgrade the prominent area.

Amenity Society's Eden lecture

The 1999 annual environmental lecture organised by Looe and District Amenity Society will take place at Looe Junior School on Thursday, September 30 at 7.30pm, to which everyone is welcome, free of charge.

Entitled "From Heligan to Eden", the lecture with slides will be given by Tim Smit of The Eden Project Development and promises to be a fascinating evening for all those interested.

Ken's seat in the Rose Garden

Mrs Ann Dingle, widow of the late Mr Ken Dingle, has offered to place a seat in the Rose Garden by the Guildhall dedicated to his memory. Mr Dingle was well known for his accordion playing in the garden, and over the years raised many hundreds of pounds for charity.

The East Looe Town Trust have been delighted to accept the seat which they have described as a very fitting memorial to a well like member of the community.

Easier access to the Guildhall

Recognising that access to the Council Chamber up the steep stone steps to the first floor of the Guildhall is difficult for the elderly and disabled, members of East Looe Town Trust are making investigations in the feasibility of installing a chair lift. They are also discussing the provision of disabled access to The Wooldown.

Groomed for stardom

Barbican World of Pets owner Lorraine who runs the East Looe shop in partnership with her husband Stewart, is to star in a Westcountry Television production "Animal Sanctuary", to be screened on Monday, September 27 between 5.30-6pm.

The programme surrounds the work of the Woodside Animal Shelter which the couple support, and Lorraine was chosen in the South West as a groomer with a reputation, transforming all her canine and feline customers into show standard. Both local shows and Crufts are associated with her achievements. During the programme, which was filmed at the shop in March, Lorraine will be seen grooming a variety of pets, including rescued animals, and she will be offering some useful advice on their general care.

Lorraine began her grooming career in 1986 after training in Plymouth, starting at Looe Grooming Service, and moving to Dave and Sue Crocker's Pets and Gardens in Liskeard in 1993. She opened her own pet store, incorporating both the Looe and Liskeard Grooming Parlours in 1997.

Flower ladies 'Musical Interludes'

Chairman Bridget Clark welcomed everyone to the Looe and District Flower Arrangement Society's first meeting after the summer recess at Pelynt Village Hall. Members were informed of the recent death of former county chairman Jacqui Law who will be sadly missed. Bridget asked for volunteers to serve as committee members ahead of the AGM in November and said there is to be a fashion show in Lanreath Village Hall on October 22 at 7.30pm.

President Pam Arnold introduced demonstrator Mary Gage whose theme was 'Musical Interludes'. She encouraged her audience to guess the titles of the songs and dances she depicted in her exhibits. They were 'In an English country garden' then 'Wheel on fire', a red arrangement incorporating a wheel. Next came 'By the light of the silvery moon', a modern exhibit in silver and white. These were ensued by 'The Floral Dance', 'Out of Africa' and 'The Can Can'. Brenda Thomas gave the vote of thanks.

Competition winners - The Last of Summer - were 'B' class Jean Pengelly; 'A' class 1st Bridget Clark and Sheila Welchman, 3 Joy Carey.
