CORNWALL County Council's road safety unit is looking for someone to join its team of dedicated lollipop patrols as 'flying' relief in the Callington area. With 124 school crossing patrol sites across the county, the road safety unit relies on the dedication and professionalism of 132 permanent and relief patrols. But there are times when an unforeseen emergency or sickness means they need to supply cover to a patrol site at short notice. Sandra Amy, school crossing patrol co-ordinator for the Callington area, said: 'We really need someone with common sense and community spirit who would be willing to work with children and other pedestrians in Callington to help them cross roads in safety. 'This is a really worthwhile job – we have patrols in Cornwall who have been with us for more than 30 years and thoroughly enjoy being a familiar part of community life. We hope that someone reading this will either be interested themselves or know someone suitable for the job.' As a town, or flying relief, the person would cover two sites outside Callington primary school in Saltash Road and New Road and one site in Launceston Road which crosses pupils from both the community college and primary school. The duty times are approximately 30 to 40 minutes at school start and finish times, plus an extra 15 minutes per duty. All sites are Monday to Friday during term time. Anyone interested should call Sandra Amy, school crossing patrol co-ordinator, on (01872) 327886.
