In this week’s Cornish Times – many young people are going back into school for the first time in several months today. As well as separated class ’bubbles’ and temperature taking there were plenty of excited smiles as the new Year 7s started in Liskeard this morning. We find out what measures head Alex Lingard and his staff are taking to keep everyone safe as term begins, while being as normal as possible about school life. Primaries in the district are starting soon too, and the chief executive of one academy trust in South East Cornwall tells us how his staff are excited to see pupils return and what they’ll be doing to help youngsters catch up.
Inside the paper a huge landslide in Whitsand Bay during Storm Francis cut off access to a beach. Environmentalist Claire Wallerstein highlights the potential damage of sediment run-off to the fragile eco-system of the seabed – and explains how farming practices could change to help protect topsoil.
In other environmental news, local members of the pressure group Extinction Rebellion have been involved in national actions to draw attention to the dangers posed by vehicle emissions. Doctors from Saltash have backed their campaign, and we hear from them about how air quality in the town is causing concern.
This week’s Cornish Times has a very special bigger Farming section this week, and we lead it with an in-depth interview with James Moon, who is retiring (well, sort-of!) and with this bringing four generations of his family’s stewardship of Bolitho Farm to a close. Don’t miss his thought-provoking account! Also in farming there’s news from Lanreath pig farmer Nicola Hooper who’s been involved in a national ’Farms not Factories’ campaign, and we carry the first of what will be a regular column from a young sheperdess, 13 year old Harriet Allin.
Other highlights in this week’s edition includes a guide to the annual Liskeard Unlocked heritage open day event, great news from a Saltash gym reopening bigger and better than ever, and an Open for Business section packed with useful news and information.
Look out for your favourite sections too like Nature Watch with Ray Roberts, Prayer of the Week and Puzzles – perfect for your tea break.
