This week’s Cornish Times leads with the huge Government U-turn on exam grades and what it means for the thousands of A-level and GCSE students in South East Cornwall. Schools in Cornwall on the whole have been very happy with the decision to revert to Centre Assessed Grades, and inside this week’s paper we’ve got reports and photos from A-level results day from all the schools in our area.
Year 11 students will be picking up their results today (Thurs Aug 20) and GCSEs will be awarded according to teacher assessments, as per the decision on A-levels. But the confusion and difficulty continues for some young people. One youngster describes how a downgrading of the Btec qualification she’s been studying alongside her A-levels has meant that she’s missed out on her dream to study at a particular place. And for students that have taken Btec level 1 and 2 courses, there’s still uncertainty today, as exam board Pearson says it is still reviewing the grade decisions, and can’t give out the exam results today.
Inside the paper there’s a local pub which has gone from the brink of closure to running as a thriving village shop during the lockdown. The Caradon Inn could now be in line for a national award thanks to the efforts of its landlords and we bring you the full story.
Meanwhile on the Rame Peninsula, objectors have been left stunned by a decision by Cornwall Councillors, in the face of officer recommendations, to give planning permission for a new detached house on a field close to Rame Head. We hear from the applicant, supporters and those who protested against the plans.
In our Open for Business section this week we’ve a report from the Ploughman’s Market in Liskeard, the first event to take place in the town’s new events space, and the section is packed with useful news and advice.
Sport this week brings you details of the Cornwall FA Grassroots Football Awards, where there’s been accolades for Torpoint Athletic Youth U12s and former Saltash United manager Matt Cusack, plus we report the FA Cup and FA Vase draws.
There’s a page rounding up the local football friendlies, with all the match reports from Dave Potham, and we bring you latest results from the cricket, including a report from Callington’s match against Wadebridge.
We’ve got regular highlights for you too including the wonderful Nature Watch with Ray Roberts, Farming pages, Puzzles and more.
Look out for your latest edition of the Cornish Times, in the shops today!
