Water ski race
The South West regional heat of the national water ski racing championships will take place this Sunday on the River Tamar close to Saltash and north of the Tamar Bridge.
Four races are to be held, the first starting at 10am. Each race will be about 35 minutes duration with six to eight competitors. This is the first time the race has been held on the Tamar. Competitors will enjoy an exemption from the usual dockyard port of Plymouth speed limit. Mariners are asked to keep clear of the racing. Good view, refreshments etc. from Saltash Waterside.
Death of MBE vicar
The Rev John Wilfred Harvey, who featured on our front page last week, receiving his MBE from the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lady Mary Holborow, has sadly died at his home at Hannafore, just a week later.
The 93 year old received the MBE for his outstanding wood craftsmanship in Truro Cathedral and local churches since his retirement 30 years ago. Much sympathy is extended to his wife Dorothy.
Heart attack
A sunbather on Cawsand Beach was rushed to Derriford Hospital on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest. Land and air ambulances crews were scrambled and Tamar coastguards came to his aid just before 4.00pm.
Balcony approved
Following a refusal decision in 1996 a proposal for a balcony extension to Ashtorre Rock community centre, Saltash has been given unanimous approval by Caradon's planners.
Foul play!
The prize for guessing the weight of a family of baby ducklings at a fete in Lostwithiel recently was - a chicken dinner. The ducks were relieved . . .
Marine sport degree
A marine sports technology degree was launched by Pete Goss on July 6, at his Goss Challenge Centre in Totnes. It is to be offered by the University of Plymouth and aims to give a boost to the marine industry.
