Karaoke challenge

LISKEARD'S Carlton Suite held the first heat of 'The New Carlton £1,000 Karaoke Challenge' on Thursday last with the 10 contestants performing before an audience of some 200.

The final will be held in December. New Carlton owners CJK Leisure say they have had an excellent response to the challenge and the first event was sponsored by Jewsons Ltd of Liskeard who also provided the judges. After a tough decision they choose Keith Standley of Tremar, who gave a great rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis's 'Great Balls of Fire'. The next heat on Thursday, April 18, at 8pm, will be sponsored by The Beer Seller. Those who weren't successful this time are invited to compete in another heat if they wish.

Over 50 pupils perform

at recorder concert

A recorder concert involving more than 50 pupils from all year groups was much enjoyed by a large attendance at Liskeard Junior School on Monday.

Under the instruction of the school's music co-ordinator, teacher Mrs Selina Jolly, the young musicians, some having only taken up recorder playing during the previous term, together with the more experienced, put on some talented and entertaining performances.

Among the varied programme were items from Yrs 3/4, and 5/6, as well as the more advanced 'Whiz Kids' who were joined by soloist Amy Edwards for Lazy Coconut Tree. Zachary Leon palyed the Skye Boat Song accompanied by Eloise Law on the violin, and the Recorder Club were joined for their rendition of Bugle Calls by brass musicians Chelsea and Eryn Kelly, and Yasmin Stevens.

The evening ended with a lively Boogie Woogie with everyone taking part for which there were several encores. Mrs Jolly was accompanist throughout on guitar and piano, and head teacher Martin Clark gave the vote of thanks and congratulated the pupils for such an entertaining musical evening to end the term.

Parents were afterwards invited to view the school's large Easter tree, hung with decorated blown eggs, which had pride of place in the library.
