Lions to tread the boards

ONCE more the intrepid Lions of Liskeard are to tread the boards - for their sixth annual pantomime 'Dick Whittington and his Cat'.

A local flavour is added by Dick being a stout Cornish lad, as well as by the appearance of the Fabulous Lions Dancers and Geoffery, the Wandering Friar. This is the last such pantomime to be written by Pam Andrew. The first two performances, on January 17 and 18, are for the senior citizens of Liskeard and district, with free admission and refreshments provided. Members of the general public can see the show in the Public Hall on January 19 with tickets at £3.50 for adults and £2 for under l5s. A licensed bar will be available.

All performances take place at 7.30pm and tickets are available from Stuprint, Hunt Associates and Geoffrey Harris Tyres. Senior citizens from outlying districts should contact their village representative to reserve a seat - these being Dobwalls (Mike Higman 01579 320417); St Neot (Mary Bellringer 01579 320538); St Ive/Quethiock (Barbara Bennet, 01579 383938); St Cleer (Mike Osborne 01579 343909); Commonmoor (Jean Cole 01579 343497); Taphouses (Ian Sheer 01579 320633); St Keyne (Jean Roach 01579 342389); Duloe (George Libby 01503 262453); Trewidland (Alan Richards 01503 240259); Pensilva (Bill Mytton 01579 363036).

CAB donation

THE annual donation by Liskeard Town Council to the work of the Citizen's Advice Bureaux (CAB) was £700 this year compared with £1,200 in the previous financial year.

It was pointed out that the £1,200 had been an increased sum for a specific reason. The council had returned to giving its usual level of donation.

Graffiti to go

THE graffiti which has long been on view to A38 traffic by the road bridge in Station Road, Liskeard, may soon be erased, Liskeard mayor Tony Powell told town councillors.

President

retires

THE Liskeard Grammar School Association marked the retirement of John Lingard as its first president at a meeting in the Jubilee Inn, Pelynt,.

Mr Lingard was headmaster from l951-1976. The committee entertained Mr and Mrs Lingard to lunch and presented a photograph taken at the Reunion 2000 event. In thanking members Mr Lingard recalled his arrival in Cornwall in l951. He had been living and working in Liverpool, and the Cornish countryside had convinced him he had made a good move almost as soon as he crossed the Brunel bridge .
