Mayor says council
will not buy club
THE Mayor of Torpoint, Stan Martin, has moved to dampen speculation over the future of the Racquets Sports and Leisure Club in the town.
He said: "I don't want to give the town any false hope that the club may be purchased by the town or district councils.
"When town councillor Ron Widdicombe heard that the club had closed down he informed Caradon District Council.
"They have since looked at the club. But it is unlikely that Caradon will take it on - it has been reported that it could cost £750,000 to bring the club up to modern standards.
"There's is also the possibility that such a move would jeopardise the town's bid for a sports hall.
"The town councillors have discussed among themselves if anything could be done. The swimming pool and other facilities at the club are obvious attractions.
"There has been a lot of talk in the town about using the £500,000 loan the council has secured for the major Council Chambers improvement scheme. But the council can not use the loan for any other purpose.
"Unfortunately, there is no way Torpoint Town Council can buy the club.
"We would be pleased to see another business take on the club as a going concern but we are dead against it being turned into housing."

Youngsters at the school filled 195 shoeboxes with new and nearly new items for needy children. Brian Haslam and his wife Audrey attended a special assembly at the school on behalf of the mission to collect the boxes.
The school also took part in fundraising for the Children in Need Appeal and has announced that a total of £243 was collected.
Meanwhile, the school has appealed for donations of unwanted Lego which can be played with by the pupils at lunchtime.
Advertising idea
DETAILS about Torpoint Town Council may be advertised on the Torpoint Ferries. Caradon District Council has asked the town council if it wishes to be included on an advertising board on the ferries.
Caradon suggested that funding for the advertising was available from the European Objective 1 scheme.
Town councillors decided to advertise the council as long as the funding did not come from its coffers.
