Tony's ultimate
bike challenge
WHITE water rafting, scuba diving, a l80km cycle across the Kinabalu national park in Borneo, and a trek to the summit of a 13,455ft mountain are the four challenges facing a Liskeard man in his bid to raise money to help disabled children.
Tony Elliott, 47, is taking part in a sponsored charity trip to Borneo called 'The Ultimate Challenge'.
His inspiration for taking up the challenge came via a work colleague who had also volunteered - and through noticing a minibus of disabled children enjoying themselves on a charity-organised holiday.
The money raised from his efforts will go towards the 'Children Today Challenge' which arranges similar trips.
Tony, of Tinkerslake Cottage, Trebrownbridge, is raising £2,500 in sponsorship money, which has been coming in from a range of differing donors both locally and nationally.
His daughter, Kerry, explained that he is anxious to say a large thank you to all those who have given so generously, and said the fund-raising is still continuing.
Tony, who has run and owned the Caradon-based fencing business Topan Fencing since the late l980s, regularly takes part in squash, golf, tennis, running and five-a-side football, and is a keen member of the Liskeard/Looe rugby club.
The challenge will take in trekking to the summit of Mount Kinabalu to see the sunrise, white water rafting in the Padas river and scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean.
The tasks will take place over a short stretch of ten days, from September 16-24.
Tony can be reached on 01503 240979.
Winnie walks for Woodside
A SPRITELY 74 year old from Liskeard is undertaking a five-mile sponsored walk all in the name of charity.
Winnie McCoubrey has already raised £200 for her walk, in aid of the Woodside Animal Shelter, which will take place near the shelter's main headquarters in Devon.
If you would like to sponsor Winnie, donations can be given to the Liskeard branch of the Woodside charity shop. The walk is on September 9.
Oliver gala boosts
Save the Children
THE Liskeard branch of Save the Children has benefited by £1,669.95 from a gala performance of Oliver held at Sterts earlier this month.
Thanks have gone to Sterts, as well as local business sponsors and those who gave donations and helped with a raffle.
Jane Wood, chairman of the Liskeard branch said: 'Children performing so successfully and professionally at Sterts have, by their commitment, made it possible to bring benefits to children in other parts of the world, children who, in this 21st century, are still trying to survive in circumstances not unlike Oliver's in the workhouse, and in many situations far worse.'
Thanks were extended to all those attending the gala evening and who contributed to it.
