Test sponsor
offers jobs
THE firm which sponsors the current Ashes cricket test series between England and Australia, together with the television series 'The Bill', is seeking around 50 new staff in the West Country - including South East Cornwall.
The utility supplier 'npower' wants 50 full time fully employed sales people who would be based in their local area, as it is focusing at the moment on the South West region. Anyone interested should call area manager, Rob Belfit, on 07989 499423.
Site sought for
jubilee party
PLANS are being laid for Liskeard celebrations to mark the Queen's golden jubilee next year.
Discussions took place at last Tuesday's full council meeting as to where is best to hold a street party. Suggestions include closing the Parade, (although it was acknowledged this produced complaints when it occurred for the Millennium party), putting barriers up along the Parade to allow cars to use the road and protect children at the same time, using school grounds or choosing Westbourne car park, or the Cattle Market. No decision has been made, as yet, as to the best site, but it was agreed to write to Parent Teacher Associations and Friends of local schools, asking for their help and support. Councillors said they realise help will be required because the town clerk, Brenda Furse, and her staff were run off their feet striving to organise the Millennium event.
Barras Cross
officers elected
THE first annual meeting of the Barras Cross residents' association has been held at Liskeard public hall.
The association has previously been run by a steering committee, but now officers have been appointed for the next year, and formal procedures have been adopted.
Issues of concern to members include planning and housing development, traffic, road safety and vandalism. During the meeting the following officers were elected: chair Jenny Marchant, deputy chair Gregory Willing, treasurer Sybil Rickett, secretary Jean Bailey, and press officer Alan Groves.
Future meetings will be publicised on the town notice board and all residents in the Barras Cross area are urged to attend to ensure their views can be represented.
Speaking
about Enid
THE speaker at the next meeting of Liskeard WI will be Gillian Barestock who will be talking about her mother, Enid Blyton.
The meeting will be held on August 8
Behind the scenes
skateboard work
WORK is being carried out to ensure that the children of Liskeard are provided with a skateboard at Rapsons Field as soon as possible.
However, most of the work is being carried on behind the scenes, in a bid to ensure that work on the ground will occur sooner rather than later.
Liskeard mayor, Tony Powell, has been in talks with Caradon council this week trying to iron out a number of problems which need to be solved before the base for the already-purchased ramp can be made.
These inlude checking the site for gas and electricity and other services, dealing with health and safety considerations as to the proper construction and design of the base and ramp, and overcoming complications regarding the lease of the site between Caradon and the town council.
A group from a Mission in Kent, currently in the Liskeard area, had intended to lay the concrete floor for the ramp this week, under the superivision of Steve Piper who is currently converting Greenbank Chapel. However, due to the administrative hiccups, this work could not go ahead this week.
Mr Powell said that it was hoped the scheme would progress on the ground as soon as the appropriate clearances had been arranged.
