Fayre plus a
sports festival
THE Liskeard school and community college association is to hold its annual summer fayre on June 29 - this one of the major fund-raising events of the school year.
For 2001 the school will be combining with the Top Link Sports Festival, and involving children from local primary schools in the area who will be joining the school and community college in September.
Pupils from Liskeard school undergoing their Sports Leadership qualification, will be involved in the running of the event which will consist of Quick Cricket, Short Tennis, Netball High 5, and Five-a-side Football.
Refreshments will be available, including strawberries and cream, ices and drinks etc.
It is thought that around l,000 of Liskeard school's pupils and several hundred from local primary schools will be taking part in the Festival. The event will begin at 2pm.
Heart ride across
moor is cancelled
ONE of the county's biggest charity cycle rides has been cancelled as direct result of the foot and mouth epidemic.
The Cornwall Heart cycle ride, now in its fifth year, was due to begin and end at Liskeard school and community college on June 17. It would have taken those involved across moorland to Jamaica Inn. Last year the event attracted nearly 300 riders and raised over £6,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
The Foundation had received a large number of enquiries in recent weeks about the ride, and delayed making a final decision in the hope all restrictions would be lifted. However, it will take place as usual next year, in June.
Mark Vyvyan, area organiser for Cornwall, said: 'Naturally we felt disappointed in having to make this decision, but with riders coming from various parts of the country it was the only responsible approach to take. We are very much aware of the risks involved in organising an event of this kind, and have a great deal of empathy with the farming community.' The decision was also supported by members of the local British Heart Foundation branches in Liskeard and Saltash.'
In Cornwall over the past year or so the Foundation has funded the provision of a large number of life-saving defibrillators for GPs, and 'First Responders', the setting up of emergency life support training centres, and the provision of rehabilitation grants for the welfare of heart patients. With the help of all BHF Cornwall branches and through public appeal, the Foundation recently provided an echocardiograph for Treliske Hospital, Truro at a cost of over £70,000.
Talk on
China
THE speaker at the June 20 meeting of the St Martin's church women's group will be Peggy Stewart who will talk on 'My life in China'.
Volunteers
needed
LISKEARD in Bloom members will be planting their tubs and baskets on Sunday, June 10, and they are looking for volunteers to help.
Anyone who can spare an hour or two should go along to the fountain on the Parade in the town centre at 9am, taking along gloves, trowel and a bin bag.
The hanging baskets, which are under the command of Chris Lloyd, will be positioned and hung on the same day so there is a need for a couple of able bodied men to help with the heavy lifting.
This year's display includes last year's begonias, which were carefully stored and brought on at the nursery and which are now bigger and better than ever.
