Soon to
go digital
NEW equipment is to be installed so that the Smart film club in Liskeard will enable future film to be projected from a DVD source rather than the VHS tapes used at present.
The ability to project high quality images, with digital surround sound, will be enhanced further by subtitles for the hard of hearing.
Unfortunately, however, the next film, to be shown in the lower hall at St Martin's - l02 Dalmatians - will continue to be from a VHS tape source. This will be screened on May 12 at 6.30pm.
Proposal to extend
Pensilva milk plant
AN application for the extension of a milk processing and packing plant at Pensilva was due to be debated by Caradon councillors yesterday evening (Thursday).
The plan, for the Ten Acres Industrial Estate, St Ive Road, is by Newlands Farm Limited. Following a site meeting the proposal had been previously deferred to allow for a full sound survey to be undertaken.
A letter of objection had been received from the Caradon branch of the Council for the Protection of Rural England regarding potential noise nuisance to nearby residents, and increased volume of traffic. Letters of objection from residents have also been received, as well as a petition.
At a previous meeting members were told the cooling compressors would be situated inside the building, and the refrigeration lorries would be located to the west side of the site.
Jeanne is
a burgess
LISKEARD town councillors have made Jeanne Rees, a former mayor of the town, an honorary burgess.
Mrs Rees recently resigned from the town council due to ill health. Her honorary burgess medal and certificate were presented to her at her home by Liskeard town clerk, Brenda Furse.
Egg pricking
council offer
THERE have been a number of Liskeard residents taking up the town council offer to contribute £5 towards the cost of pricking gulls' eggs - in an attempt to keep down the town's seagull population.
The service is available to residents of Westbourne Lane through to the Cattle Market, down to Sungirt Lane and up as far as Church Street and Pound Street.
The cost of the service will be £15 for two visits, with three storey buildings dependent upon accessibility. Those wanting to take advantage of the offer should apply to the town clerk's office at 3 West Street, Liskeard PL14 6BW (telephone 01579 345407) by April 27.
Work continuing
on the website
WORK is still being put into forming the Liskeard town council website.
The bulk of the work has been achieved, but at the council's monthly meeting on Tuesday evening deputy mayor, Tony Powell, said input was required from each of the council committees - this information to be received by the end of May.
The front page of the website will include a picture of the viaduct, from which a brief tour of Liskeard will be available. The site will be based around the colour maroon, which is predominant in the council chamber.
Hannah makes
a world record
THE moment everyone at Dobwalls Adventure Park had been waiting for arrived at 3pm on Bank Holiday Monday when seven-year-old Hannah Burtwell of Plympton became the millionth passenger to be carried by the Park's Rio Grande locomotive, the General Palmer - thus setting a world record for a seven and a quarter gauge steam loco.
As she boarded the train Hannah was presented with an Easter egg by Dobwalls proprietor, John Southern, together with a free life-time pass to the Park for a family of four, a bottle of champagne for her mother, Joanne, and an engraved silver salver. Hannah was also able to sit in the driver's cab.
There is currently no category for this particular record in the Guinness Book of World Records, but the Adventure Park has been invited to apply for a new category which would record the General Palmer's feat.#
Plea to clean
up the mess
RESIDENTS on the Pengover Estate in Liskeard are urging those who walk dogs in the area to ensure that the streets are kept free from dog mess.
One resident pointed out that since foot and mouth restrictions were introduced the streets on the estate have become covered in such mess. She said: 'I understand that people cannot let their dogs off the lead where they used to, and they are forced to walk them in the streets, but all we are asking is that they clean up after their animals. All responsible dog owners do.'
Dates for the
Liskeard diary
LISKEARD'S time capsule is to be buried beneath the Millennium Celtic cross on the Safeway roundabout on April 29 at 4pm.
Another date for the town diary is the Mad Hatter's Sports Day, organised to replace the New Year's Eve celebrations, washed out by the weather.
The event, which is planned to include live music, a crazy hat competition, bowling for a pig, and maybe a maypole, Morris dancers or a Furry Dance has been set for May 7 from 2-6pm at the community school.
